orcas island

Orcas Island is a beautiful little island in the San Juan archipelago just a few miles south of the Canadian border and 70 miles north of Seattle. It is home to about 5,000 permanent residents and a popular destination for tourists. It is within the Puget Sound so it is sheltered from the Pacific waves and storms. It is also sheltered from 30% of the rain that falls on Seattle lying in a ‘rain shadow’. As well as being an island Orcas has a mountainous topology and a beautiful state park: Moran State Park with miles of trails and two large fresh water lakes.
